ԬӬӬAll right.
Hello, everybody.
There’s a special brotherhood in Primerica.
He’s my sisters and brothers in the front and even the people in the back.
I haven’t met you.
You’re still part of the team.
The leaders know anyone who tries.
You separate from the ordinary, and you try to do something great with us.
And we respect every single one of you for trying, because most people don’t have the onions to do that.
Like, everybody wants to be somebody.
I always wanted to be somebody.
I didn’t think being an attorney was.
I became an attorney because I wanted to find out about what kind of business I wanted to be in, to be somebody.
When I was a lawyer, I did a bunch of different things.
I imported boats from Australia.
We did that.
I started a haircare line.
At one time, we.
ӬӬӬWhat else did I do? We did a bunch of stuff, built some houses.
But I always really wanted to be somebody.
Now, what stops people? Everybody wants to be somebody, but what stops them? They worry, what if I fail? What will people think of me? What will I do then? These are the some concerns that people have about what they want to do and what they want to be, and some are justified.
If you try to be somebody, you step out of the norm, you get smacked down a little bit.
There were times in my life where things didn’t really.
I try to do things maybe a little over my head.
And I ran for U.S.
House of Representative.
I was 27 years old.
A lot of you guys have kids that are 27 years old.
They had televised debates.
”¨”¨”¨I went against the guy who’s been in Congress 14 years.
They gave me all these policy manuals I had to study.
I get to the debate.
They ask him a question.
Do you think Social Security is important for senior citizens? I’m like, oh, crap.
I can answer questions like that.
So he gave a little answer.
They turned to me to go, all right, Mr.
Cardino, there’s three factions in the Sandinista insurgency.
Which faction specifically, which leader would you negotiate with? I was like, Social Security is really important for seniors.
And in my mind, I’m going, what am I doing here? What the hell’s going on? So then a year earlier, I’m going to take it back.
I’m an attorney for one month.
I’m working at town attorney’s office in town of Babylon.
And this is the Oak Beach Inn.
ӬӬӬIf you live in New York or Long island, anybody ever hear the Oak Beach Inn? This was one of the hottest nightclubs.
It was right on the water.
I used to go to Every Sunday with my boat.
Big litigation.
I mean, big lit.
Look, they had articles of it in New York Times.
They wrote a book about it.
It was nasty.
The owner, Bob Matson, suing the town.
The town suing them.
They’re alleging corruption.
Fighting over the land is a $20 million lawsuit.
So I’m working on a lawsuit.
I’m a new attorney.
And one night the town gets fed up.
They have two code enforcement officers block their cars, block the parking lot with their cars.
So the owner, Bob Madison, rams right through the cop cars into the parking lot, and they arrest him.
So I’m at a town attorney’s office.
”¨”¨”¨The next morning, we’re having breakfast with the other lawyers, and we’re talking about breakfast meeting.
And the town attorney goes, hey, listen, there’s somebody here who wants to interview one of us from this show, Current Affair.
Anybody remember Current Affair? So the guy was, I’m not doing it.
I’m not doing it.
I’m not doing it.
I’m not doing it.
They look around, I’m like, the new guy.
I’m like, I mean, we could be on tv.
I’ll do it.
So they give me a file.
I looked through the file really quickly, right? I take a look at the file.
And so they put me in front of the books in the conference room.
I got my suit on.
She asked me questions about the lawsuit.
I got all the good answers.
ӬӬӬAnd she goes, last night, the owner says that when he was arrested, the code enforcement officers were banging his head on the hood of the car.
He got injured.
I go, the witness statements right here show there was no such altercation.
And then.
So they’re saying this stuff, right? And they go.
And then he says that he was pepper sprayed.
I go, the code enforcement officers aren’t even authorized to carry pepper spray.
And she goes, and they said when he was handcuffed in the backseat of the car, they were hitting him with the radio.
I go, there’s no indication of that anywhere in any of the files.
All the witnesses didn’t indicate that.
Okay, thank you very much.
So I said, when’s it going to be on tv? Thursday night.
So I called all my friends and family.
ӬӬӬWe get around the tv, Current Affair comes on.
This was the reporter, Krista Bradford.
So they go right after commercial, we’ll come back with our head story.
The Babylon, the town from hell.
I go, this doesn’t look good.
This does not look good.
So they come back and they go to me.
So they start the interview, right? They showed a guy, Bob Matheson, Walking out of the hospital one crutch, a neck brace, a black guy, a bandage around his head.
This does not look good.
And it’s silent.
We’re watching.
It’s silent.
No one’s saying anything.
But they’re all looking each other like, so, Mr.
Cardino, we hear that his head was smashed on the hooded car when he was arrested.
I go, there’s no indication.
Not in a report.
Let’s go to the videotape.
What? Like now everything’s videotaped.
ӬӬӬBack in 1988, nobody had videotape.
The guy had a camera crew.
Like.
Like if you videotape somebody.
Wasn’t a camera.
It was like this.
He had people in the bushes.
I just know what they show him smashing the guy’s head on the thing like this.
What about the pepper spray? Not authorized.
Pepper spray, the radio that.
Beating a crap out of the guy.
It was over with the commercial.
All right, we’re gonna leave now.
Just.
And then they played that loop in the bar that had TVs all over the place.
They played that loop every day.
I never could go back to that bar ever again.
It was just horrible.
And I’m thinking, all because I wanted to be somebody.
Now, if you want to come and work in Primerica, we alleviated a lot of those issues.
You don’t have to quit your job.
”¨”¨”¨You don’t have to invest a lot of money.
You don’t have to take a lot of risk.
The only thing that comes with anything is that what will people think of me.
And if you let that stop you’re crazy.
Right? There’s statues erected around the world to those being criticized, but there’s no statues for the critics you know I’m talking about.
So when I joined Primerica in the early days, it wasn’t like it is today.
Today, there’s not a lot of faith that you need.
But back then, we had to take the primerical leap of faith.
And I’m going to show you what it was like when Roy Lipson, Ray Costello, the Narrains, when we got started, kind of what it was like.
Okay, The Primerica Leap of fai.
Only envelope from the lion’s head.
That’s the notes I took in the meeting.
ӬӬӬNobody can chop this Indy.
And you must hurry.
Come quickly.
That’s Joann, sir.
Hurry.
It’s a leap of faith.
You must believe, boy.
You must believe.
Oh, crap.
Just got licensed.
I think I can.
I think I can.
That was key right there.
Listen, George used to say, I walk through the minefields in the snow.
And I got to the other side.
If you walk in my footprints, you’ll get to the other side safely as well, Right? He told us that all the time in that video clip when you threw the rocks along, that it gave people a place to follow.
We didn’t really have that in the beginning.
Let me tell you what happens when you come to that leap of faith today.
There’s two railings on each side.
They got lights from Wall Street.
There’s an usher that walks you.
ӬӬӬThey give you a drink of lemonade before you start.
They walk across this flashing lights.
There’s a buffet at the other side.
It’s a lot different.
There’s no faith now.
There’s no hope.
Now.
This thing works.
If you want to see proof, look at all the people came on stage.
The people in the front, the people who are winning, the people with the ring, the people getting promoted, the people getting recognized.
Where we are as a company, the New York Stock Exchange, our stock going through the roof, the people who think about us, number four in the country.
This is not like, I hope it works.
I hope it works.
It absolutely works.
The question, are you going to work? Are you going to take advantage of this? ӬӬӬAnd I just want to kind of wrap up with the story of the eagle and the prairie chickens.
Now, some of you might have heard this, but this is a true story.
There was a.
It’s a true story.
There was an Indian brave walking, taking a hike, and he finds an eagle egg on the floor.
It fell out of a nest and it was too high to carry it back up and get it back up in the nest.
But he found a prairie chicken nest and he put it in there.
Now, prairie chickens are like, not cool birds, all right? This is a prairie chicken.
They fly about 10, 15ft at the most.
They live their life on the ground bearing for worms and grubs, and that’s what they eat.
ӬӬӬBut this eagle egg was placed in their nest and they took care of that egg and they hatched that egg.
And when that eagle was born, he was raised as a prairie chicken.
And he didn’t learn how to fly high in the sky.
He Learned to fly 5 or 10, 15ft.
And he didn’t eat meat.
He wasn’t.
He ate grubs and worms like other prairie chickens.
And when he was halfway through his life of living his life as a prairie chicken, because everyone told him that’s what he was, one day he saw an eagle flying in the sky and he looked up and he was amazed and he says, what’s that? And they said, that’s the eagle.
He’s the king of the sky.
He’s the lord of all birds.
And he says, that’s amazing.
”¨”¨”¨He goes, don’t even think of doing that, because you’re just a prairie chicken.
And the story has two endings.
The one that I read was that the eagle listened to the people around him and lived the rest of his life as a prairie chicken and never flown with the eagles.
Never.
But my ending to the story is different, as he says, I don’t give a crap what you guys say.
I got something like that inside of me.
And he climbs up to the top of the cliff and he jumps off and he soars with the eagles.
So the question for you is, are you going to stay a prairie chicken because people tell you that’s what you’re supposed to be, or are you going to soar like an eagle and be the person you’re supposed to become? Let’s go fly with the eagles.
”¨”¨”¨Let’s go kick some ass.
I’ll see you guys at the top.
