  • Growth never stops at promotion

Video Summary

Nelida Flynn delivers a powerful analogy comparing success in Primerica to the arcade game Dragon’s Lair. In the game, the knight Dirk must navigate traps, dragons, and wrong turns to rescue Princess Daphne. One wrong move leads to failure, forcing the player to start over — but each attempt builds knowledge and skill.

Flynn explains that starting in Primerica feels the same. New recruits submit their application, attend orientation, complete their fast start, and quickly realize they don’t know everything. They may fail the life exam, experience chargebacks, lose recruits, or miss promotions by small margins. These setbacks are not signs to quit — they are part of the learning curve.

She emphasizes the importance of mentorship. Just like players watching someone else in the arcade to avoid wasting their turn, new reps must observe their leaders closely during training appointments. Watch where they sit, how they present, how they handle objections, and how they close. Mastery comes through replication.

Flynn reassures the audience that every RVP once struggled. Everyone made mistakes. But through repetition, improved language, and persistence, skills sharpen. Closing becomes natural. Recruiting becomes consistent. Confidence grows.

She shares examples of near misses and disappointments but reinforces that resilience creates breakthroughs. When you recruit one person, you can recruit thousands. When you close one sale, you can close many more. Major milestones — promotions, trips, leadership levels — are achieved through steady growth.

Her closing message is clear: this is a game worth playing. Watch. Learn. Replicate. Stay humble. Keep leveling up until you win.

Video Summary

00:00
I wanted to talk about, you know, years ago, right? Years, years ago. There used to be. There wasn’t video games like they are today, right? There’s video games now. Like, you see the blood, people die. Like, you feel you’re that person. But years ago, those games weren’t available, right? It was like pinball games. Maybe sometimes Pac man had started to come out. And all of a sudden there was this game that came out and it was called, like Dragon Slayer, right? Dragon Slayer. And it was like a storybook. And people got really engaged in this game because you’re that lead person. You’re this night Dirk, and he’s trying to rescue you, Princess Daphne. And you know, what made this game so special was, like, the graphics and, you know, before, you know, the time of how they are today.

01:05
And people would be engaged in this video because you were, you know, you’re the person in this video. And that game proceeded. And I always think about Primerica, right? And life is kind of like this big game. And I’m going to go through this game. A hero’s journey through career growth. And you first start out in this game, right? You see him, and he comes into this castle. And what happens in this game, you have to make choices throughout the game. So if you go left, he’s trying to save the princess. There’s traps, there’s. There’s dragons. And if you make a misstep, like, if you go left when you should be going right, you die, okay? And there’s different levels to this game. And then the next level comes and you’re like, okay, what room is she in? Where am I going to go?

02:06
And if you go into the wrong room, you die, okay? But the thing is, the game doesn’t remember where you got up to. So every time you died, you had to start all over again. Okay, now, you know, so kind of like here, right, you start out, you submit your application, you go to your orientation, you do your fast start. You’re so afraid, right? You’re like, what am I going to do? And when you play Dragon’s Lair, you know you’re going to die because there’s no way, you know, if I’m going to go to the room on the left or the right. You’re guessing in the beginning, you know, but you expect to die, right? Okay, so here too, you’re not going to know everything in the beginning. And you know what? You’re going to die, okay? But you just got to keep going.

03:00
So the game pinball machines were 25 cents every time you played. But Dragons, there was like $1.25, okay? So you had to pay attention to this game. So what happens is he starts to dodge the traps and the obstacles, right? And everybody wants to play the game. So they’re all watching the player, right? Because it’s $1.25, you get killed. You got to start all over again. So what happens is people start to get really good. Everybody’s watching the person that’s playing. They’re like, okay, he goes to this, goes to the left, he takes the sword, he jumps over here, he grabs a rope, and every person gets a little bit farther, right? Until the next screen, because nobody knows what’s going to happen in the next screen.

03:51
But what happens is you start to get really good at this game because you’re going through all the obstacles and people behind you, right? They got to spend $1.25. So they’re paying attention because when it’s their turn, they want to make sure they get farther in the game. Well, you know what? That’s kind of how like it is here. You’re going to do training appointments, all right? You’re going to learn overcoming objections. You’re going to watch your leader go and do the training appointments, right? You’re going to watch them. You’re going to see where they sit, where are they placing the husband and wife. They have the pen that’s pointing to the presentation. They have that presentation. And you’re going to watch, all right, so you don’t get killed, right?

04:35
You’re going to keep watching, and you’re going to keep learning, and you’re going to keep replicating what they’re doing. All right? Again, learning from mistakes. Early errors at work that become valuable learning experiences. In the beginning especially, everybody has made mistakes. RVPs, right? We. Everyone starts from the beginning. We all made the same mistakes. You know, guess what? You’re going to get a charge back. Guess what? You’re going to get $100,000 investment, and they’re going to call you the next day, and they’re going to say, we changed our mind. Okay? You’re going to hire three people. They’re going to quit on you, okay? You’re going to hire somebody. And by the evening that happened to me, I went to Manhattan, hired somebody that evening at 7pm Got into the car with Joe Cardino. They quit on me, okay? It’s gonna happen, all right?

05:26
But you don’t give up, right? You just keep going because you’re gonna find that person you’re gonna fail the life exam a few times, right? You don’t close the sale, but you’re gonna keep getting better and better. So Dirk keeps getting better, he keeps battling, right? You go on training appointments, and all of a sudden you hire your first teammate by yourself. When you hire one, you can hire thousands, all right? You start closing the sale by yourself. You do it once, you could do it thousands of times. You learn how to say, like, after the presentation, oh, what did you like most about the presentation? The opportunity? The concepts or both, right? You get so good at your language, okay? You start getting better and better, overcoming major obstacles, right?

06:15
Now, Dirk, he’s gotten so far in that castle, he is going to confront that dragon. Here’s where we tackle significant projects or challenges in your career. How about some of you? I know someone. Joe Catanzaride’s team, right? Gina Slouf, right? You know, she just missed her promotion last month. It was like. And sometimes you’re going to do it. You’re going to do $2,449 and miss it, right? But you know what? You’re going to come back and do it with Excellence and get 5000 in Premium the next month. And I know she got her promotion, right? Awes. You dust yourself off and you pull yourself back. Just like Colby was talking about, right? Taking that securities exam over and over, achieving success. He finally rescues Princess Daphne. You reach a major milestone, right? You get it done.

07:04
You pass the life exam, you get the promotion. You start to win company trips, but the journey continues, right? Dirk prepares for the next adventure. You gotta keep growing here, right? You gotta be humble here. You know, you got to know you’re going to promote six districts, right? You’re going to take your securities exam. You’re going to become an rvp, right? We play games, right? Let’s play this game of life, of Primerica. Let’s go win, and let’s go win for our families. And let’s all become RVP’s as soon as possible, right? Thank you.
