Prospecting for People, Not Just Sales: The Primerica Difference – Jimmy Meyer

Executive TLDR

  • Separate contenders from pretenders to build strong teams.

  • Leaders must continue being coachable and growing.

  • Success comes from consistent recruiting and development.

  • Emotional stability flattens the business roller coaster.

  • Push up people—not “push me up”—to build lasting legacy income.

Video Summary

In Prospecting For People, Not Just Sales: The Primerica Difference, Jimmy Meyer delivers a passionate leadership message centered on growth, commitment, recruiting, and culture.

Meyer emphasizes that Primerica was built on prospecting people—not just selling products. While sales create income, recruiting and developing leaders create distribution and long-term wealth. He challenges leaders to examine whether they are building width in their business or relying solely on client production.

One of the most powerful concepts shared is separating contenders from pretenders. Contenders commit, show up early, hit goals, and duplicate results. Pretenders talk big but fail to execute consistently. Leaders must identify the difference and invest accordingly.

Meyer also warns about complacency. Emotional highs and lows are part of the journey, but consistent routines, faith, and focus flatten the roller coaster. He stresses that recruiting daily keeps hunger alive and fuels future growth.

A central theme is returning to the original Primerica philosophy of “pushing up people.” The business grows when leaders sacrifice to develop others, knowing that mutual success creates financial independence for everyone.

Ultimately, Meyer challenges leaders to recommit to width, prospecting, and duplication—reminding everyone that legacy wealth is built through people, not transactions.

Keith and Danielle, congratulations. And Blake and Diamond on this incredible event. To see your family up here last night and to just see what you all have built and what you’ve done with this incredible team. I know Joe Hensher is looking down right now. So proud. So proud. And as I come in front of you today, as you can tell already, I got so many emotions going through my body. I listen to Patty go through that story, and I wish you could have been sitting where I was to watch Savannah watch her mother with pride and admiration, love and respect. This is so much more than a business. And in the few minutes I have with you today, I’ve had an amazing week. Okay. Monday started off actually Sunday, Kim and I got invited to a friends giving. I’ve never heard of these things.

01:01

Friendsgiving, okay. And Kim and I have prayed hard on expanding our circle, expanding our friendships. Okay. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life. Keith, thank you for that very nice introduction. But I have failed in. In so many different areas of my life, and Kim and I have come together and we’ve failed. We’ve stumbled forward. I was fortunate on Monday to be with John Maxwell and John Gordon, two tremendous leadership authors and one of John Maxwell’s books that really have helped me get through life is failing forward. Okay. There comes a point where you like to stop failing forward. Like, just be like, can I go forward without ever being failing? Can exit walk sometimes.

01:44

And so Sunday, my plan was to head out to south Florida to be prepared for this leadership event on Monday that I was one of a hundred people that were going to be at, and we got invited to this friends giving. So I said, baby, we’re going to change our plans and let’s go to this because we’ve prayed hard to bring people into our life and wonderful new people. We live in a new community. And then at that, somebody invited me. And my point of bringing this up is this. Wherever you are in this room right now, I hope you’ve looked around and are visualizing you overriding a room like this one day. Whenever I went to a meeting, I would always be taking mental, visual pictures of someday I’m gonna have a row of people. Someday I’m gonna have two rows of people.

02:29

And the maniac team that’s here. We are so thankful for the 41 years we have been together, and it’s been a wonderful ride. Many things have changed over the years. One being me as the leader of it. I do not work the way I once worked. I don’t Apologize for that. Art Williams told me early on as a young man, jimmy, if you’re doing 10 and 20 and 30 and 40 years from now, what you’re doing today, you’ve done something wrong. There’s phases you go through. But in saying that, I still love what I love about this business. I don’t like it. I love it. And what I love is the fact that we get a chance to prospect, recruit, train, and develop other people and allow them to go have an incredible life.

03:20

And as Patty said, at the end, you get to stand in the front and cheer them on. I would like, if I can, by a show of hands, or stand up those you that are in the business less than 90 days that are here right now. Okay, look around now. Look around. Look, let’s not. We applaud you. Listen to me now. Listen, listen. Okay, hold on. We’re thankful you’re here. Listen to me. We are thankful you are here. But I want all of you that are sitting to listen to me. We have a problem. Nassau, we have a problem. I love this. I don’t like this, but I want you to know there will not be rooms in the future filled like this.

04:19

If we have meetings and we stand up people that have only been here for 90 days and they’re speckled around the room. When this room was built in the infant stages 20 and 30 and 40 years ago, when our great leaders, Joe, Dennis and Bob would ask, would all the new people that have joined the business the last 90 days please stand up? A minimum of one third of the room would stand proud. Thank you for standing. Grab your seat. We’re so glad you’re here. If I come across as angry, Kim always says to me, you’re angry. I’m not angry. I speak loud. I’m passionate. I’ve got mine. I’m not the richest guy in the world. We’re not the richest family in the world, but we got ours. One more doubling period, it’s 100 million. Another doubling period, it’s 200 million.

05:26

Another doubling period, it’S 400 million. I might not be here for those doubling periods, but it’s going to compound for somebody because we’ve saved our money, we followed the principles that this company teaches us. In San Diego, Chris gave an amazing talk like he did this morning, and he said, in San Diego, boy, this is the first time I’ve been on a convention. Some of my guys had, we’re on a trip and they had boat trips and shit. They didn’t even invite me to them. What happens, Chris, is our leaders stop liking being coached. They start, they’re still your buddy. Hey, good to see you. How’s it going? But they forget that we all need to be coached. The great coach John Wooden said. John Wooden won every national championship. Rash. He said, it’s what you learn. After you know it, all that counts.

06:30

I wish I could tell you I’ve always been a student. I wish I could tell you I’ve always kept growing. I’ve got. It’s called the Peter Principles, a book written on this. Every man, every woman will reach their level of incompetence. And we don’t even realize. Maybe you do. I didn’t realize when I was in it, but I’m so thankful that I’ve surrounded myself with people that have really worked with me. It started with Bob Safford when I went to Pat Safford’s funeral and they had a celebration of life. I’m Catholic. I grew up Catholic. Funerals were not a celebration of life. It was every crying and then you drink and it was just all. Yeah, they’d let balloons go. And Bob gave me a one day Bible every day. Read a. Bob was so great. He said, jimmy, read a proverb.

07:16

Bob used to get on stage and say, today’s Proverb said, Recruit seven to 10 people and you’ll be wealthy. I’m like, I read the Bible every now and then. I’ve never seen anything like that. But I started reading proverbs and I started reading the new psalms. I read a new Testament. Bob said, stay away from the Old Testament, Jimmy. Little rough for new believers. And over the years, I really feel the Holy Spirit has really grasped me recently. And I’m not preaching, okay? I, I. Please, somebody who has prayed for me, please creep, pray for me. Okay? I need all the prayers I can get. But what I do know is this. In my reading just the other day, it said. And it was talking to me, me. It said, yes, right here.

08:09

It said, now we ask you brothers, to respect those who work hard among you. I look at the Noreen team. What a bunch of hard workers. They’re eating up with it. All that personal doctor you just saw, and now that’s just. It’s getting duplicated. Then it goes on to say, oh, yeah, live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle. Encourage the timid. Help the weak. Be patient with everyone. Don’t lie down with the lazy. Warn them. So I don’t know why God had me Read that. But maybe today’s a warning that, yeah, maybe you got a good life and you’re making money. But Art Williams built this company to teach people how to be financially independent, go out and leave a legacy. See, it all starts, and it’s wonderful. We got all these million dollar earners.

09:15

That’s not where it starts. It starts with teaching people how to make $1,000 a month. It starts with teaching people how to make $2,000 a month. That’s where it starts. But even before that stage, it starts with prospecting. So I jotted down seven principles that I’ll review with you quickly. And the first one is an Art Williams principle. It says total commitment is the first step to greatness. Total commitment. Then the question is, what are you committed to? See, commitment isn’t about interest, it’s about investment investment of time, energy and money into people. John just had a unique way of explaining his investment in people at the bar last night and the other things he does. But, but how could you not love John? I mean, just I said to Kimberly, I go, it’s the first time I’ve seen John with sleeves on.

10:15

John is always out with his sleeves cut off. I love when John says, I’m from New York. John, you never have to tell anybody you’re from New York, okay? Like, like, you don’t have to open your mouth. And it’s very clear. You know anyone who wears flip flops with black socks in Florida? We want you to go back to New York, okay? And that’s out of love. Johnny, my brother, okay? But total commitment. Spend time with people, get to know people. So we look at this. I have a mission. I have a mission. All right? I left the convention two conventions ago. I wanted to go produce three RVPs. I failed. Once again, thank you, John Maxwell. I’m failing forward, but I failed in this case because I didn’t do enough work. And I also had a health issue which popped up.

11:08

But I got through that. I’m healthy than I’ve ever been. I got a trainer, two straight. Two, two muscles a week. One, one flexibility a week. Mobility. How could this hurt? So what? Why? Why God? I’m going to talk to you about this. Why me picking up this knee? I can’t even do it in front of you right now. And then bringing this back, I’m supposed to be able to do without touching. And like, why does that hurt? Why does my leg start? I don’t know. What I know is the more I do it, the better I get at it just like anything in life. But what’s sad is a lot of our leaders, including me, we’ve stopped prospecting. And if we do prospect, we prospecting for sales. I grew up in an environment.

11:56

Many of the people in the seats grew up in an environment where we prospected for people. What type of people? Breathing people. The young lady that was here who recruited 50 people directs in a month. Good Lord, 50 people direct in a month? Come on. But she’s talking to people. Social media is a great avenue, but you’re kidding yourself if you think you need to send out DMs all day long and connect with somebody. This is a connection business. It’s a relationship business. It’s a long term relationship business. It’s a personal relationship business. So we think about building a team. We started a new team. We got our make it happen. If they’d stand that, I appreciate, okay, our make it happen. We have a little virtual office because we have different locations, but we want live. Live.

12:48

I said, stan, I know we don’t have a lot of you, okay? But there’s at least five or six. We had you up in the room last night and were talking, okay? We’re masterminded, we’re planning, okay? And I love you. I want to be part of the team. What do you got going on now, Jimmy? And I explained to him, oh, I don’t like that. Oh, you want me to prospect, make phone calls? I don’t like the way that makes me feel. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Listen to me. This has nothing to do with the way you feel. This has to do with what you gotta do to change your life. If you want to go out there and make people feel good, sell ice cream. I don’t sell ice cream. I sell hope and opportunity. I sell change. People’s lives change.

13:37

People change people. So, team, we’re proud of you. I see Franny and Josh stand. These people made a commitment. I learned on Monday. John Maxwell. John Gordon taught me that. Jimmy, you want to build a great team, you better separate your contenders from your pretenders. I said. I said, give this to me a little clearer, okay? He said, listen to me. You’ll never build a great team with pretenders. I asked John Maxwell, who I’m so fortunate because in my 20s, I sat in Bob Safford’s library and I listened to John Maxwell do his tape of the month. Sat in Bob Shaft. He did his tape. There was 12 or 14 of us in there. And here I am here, now, 64 years old with John Maxwell talking one one about Bob Safford, what an amazing leader he was.

14:37

By the way, John Maxwell at 65 started a coaches program to teach people the John Maxwell coaching system. At 78 years old, 13 years later, he has 63,000 coaches around the world. I said, john, how’d you do that? He goes, jimmy, I separated the contenders from the pretenders. I said, but how? He said, you ask him for a commitment and the contenders will hit it and the pretenders won’t. And then you as a leader, you got to take action on that. Fred and Josh stepped up, set a goal, and they hit theirs. That’s where they’re wearing their nice. Our new shirt today. Do you even got it on? I can’t see over there. Not even wearing the frigging shirt. What the hell you doing? Yeah, this is better. Wear this and get your team to aspire to this, okay?

15:38

Or give it back, damn it. And then, then. Where’s my man Caesar? Caesar. Right, right there. Caesar. Great job. Made 30 grand last month. But hold on, hold on. He made 30 grand because he did a bunch of securities. Some people think, I don’t like securities. I love securities. I love when people tell me we did 70 million last month. I know about the securities business, but I also know how I got the securities business. I had a recruiting, developing, RVP business that matured over years that eventually got into the securities business just as a Williams matured into what it is today, the Primerica business, which does a lot of securities. But just so you know, if you don’t fill the front end of that, there won’t be a 100 year anniversary. We’ll have a 50 and then the other one there’s Amy.

16:43

Amy, you got your shirt on. Amy’s got her shirt on. She’s got it. So you all grab your seats. We’re proud of all you, but we’re watching. Some of you said you were gonna do it right? Now you’re in the pretender category. Yes. You guys can grab your seat. What I learned, and I learned this as a young man. Leadership’s hard because these are your friends. You like these people, especially when you have a 41 year old business. So my best friend’s like, man, dude, calm down. Like, why you got, you know, just slow down. I’m really slow. Let me tell you something. I do so many things slowly. I leave here, we’ll drive over, we get on the airplane, we’ll land in Jacksonville. I have A couple people waiting for me. We’re in a car rally thing.

17:32

I’ll tell you that at the end. It’s a fundraiser. It’s going to be fun. I do a lot of things besides this. They’re fun. Kiki said it qtr quality time remaining. I understand we’re not here forever, but I do also understand, number four contenders show up early. Study lead by exam, recruit daily pretenders, talk big, show up, sometimes justify mediocrity. Which sideline are you going to be on? If I watch your week, would I know you’re a contender or a pretender? 5. The emotional roller coaster. Deal with it. Acknowledge reality. Every builder rides it. Highs and lows. God bless you. Highs and lows. You can’t lead while reaching emotionally. You lead by staying consistent. No one wants to be around a doll. Disillusioned, frustrated. Dagum crybaby.

18:26

See, one of the things that I when I talked about Mike Nova making 30 grand, I want our team to make money. But I know this. In this great book called the Seven Commitments of a great team, John Gordon talks about another great coach. I mentioned to you about John Wooden. Now I’m going to talk to you about what’s my man, John Madden. John Madden said, winning is a great deodorant. It covers up what stinks about your team. So while we might have won, let’s continually look for ways we can improve so we don’t cover up the stink. I told Mike Novel last night, Mike, awesome. By the way, we got your notebook up here. Okay. I said, mike, we’re so proud of you making 30 grand. But you didn’t hit our standard of being a contender. You committed to it.

19:26

I care about you, Mike. Let’s commit and hit. Don’t allow your income to cover up the weaknesses in your business. Don’t use lack of income as an excuse of you’re building something that’s just as bad. This a money making business. Every single day. If you work, you’ll get paid. This. Yeah, I’m filling the pipeline. I’m filling the pipeline. What pipe we. We’re not moving oil here. You got a license? Last time I checked. You submit, you get paid back in the day. It took seven to 10 days to get the money. 12 days. Now you submit it, you get paid. So as we look at this, let’s get serious about what’s going on here. When you start thinking about understanding, learn to flatten a roller coaster through routine. Faith and focus. Faith and focus. The danger numbing of the numbers. Complacency kills hunger.

20:27

When you stop working in numbers, you stop growing. Now, if you can accept, stop growing, that’s fine. I spoke to Glen on Sunday for an hour drive. I said, glenn, I’m concerned about my business. Recruiting’s down, premium’s down. Investments are up, cash flow’s up. Concerned about it. That’s my business. Jim, why are you telling everybody? Aren’t you embarrassed by it? Not embarrassed by it. Deal with it. It is what it is. If the numbers never change, I’m going to ride off in the sunset. And my family, we’ve won. I’m the luckiest man to have that woman in my life. She dealt with me at times that she shouldn’t have dealt with me on. But I was willing to grow. She was willing to grow. I stopped drinking. I used to drink too much. I have nothing against drinking everybody to hang out with.

21:19

I love Harvey’s over there going, double digit bottles. Double digit bottles. I’m like, I love it. That was me many years ago. But I was a professional. I did it for 40 years. And I’m done now. Okay, 40 years. 18 to 58, I’m done. Okay. It was a great run. I have nothing against people that drink. It wasn’t healthy for me any longer. It was hurting me. No judgment. I don’t judge people. There’s only one judge. Reconnect your heart to the mission. Every number is a person, a family, a dream. That’s why it makes me sad how few people that joined the business last 90 days aren’t experiencing this. This business isn’t taught. It’s caught. And almost all of us caught this in a room like this. So many emotions. My first fast start. Schools with Bob Safford. The first.

22:20

What the hell is this? This is the weirdest thing ever. People cheering. Got his face painted last night. What the hell is going on here? That ain’t in 20, 25. That was in 1984, too. We used to sit there. Give me an M. Give me an A. Me and Jim Penn. God bless my brother Jim Pen. Are you ready, guys? Ready. Ready. And when it hits, next speaker. One, two, three Maniacs. Yeah, I got me Penny Ginsburg. Thank God for Pressler. Thank God for Kathy Marchesani. Because here’s. Here’s. Here’s me. I’m ready. Bob s the next speaker. Three maniacs. I’m up. Mike’s up. Kathy’s up. Freaking Jimmy’s like, do I really got to stand up? Okay. But he was engaged. Ginsberg’s picking his nose. And like, Everybody Laughs at Ginsburg. You all wish.

23:22

I Wish I had 10 Ginsburgs makes 900 grand a year and hasn’t worked in 30 years. 30. Now, guess what? As I wrap up, as I go to the final one, culture check. A.O. Williams vs. Primerica. Carrie Ginsburg probably wouldn’t make it in today’s Primerica culture. And it’s sad. It’s sad. What do you mean? Jim? Art Williams wrote a book called Pushing up people. There’s a new book that’s integrated into our great company called Push me up. Man, go to work. Go to work, man. You go to work. So I. I get this. You go to work. So I get this. That’s not what built this company. What built this company is I’m going to go to work for you to help you get something full knowing that when they get something, you’re going to get something.

24:26

I want to make it real clear I understood what Joann said early on. We have a financial interest in your success or your failure. When you make money, we make money. If you don’t make any money, we don’t make any money. Which one of those two you think I’d rather do? I think you’d rather make money, Joe. Exactly. Are you willing to submit to the system? I hear people. Whitney Cooper. Whitney and Rob Cooper are our number one office, okay? They’re our best office that we have in the maniacs. And they’re wonderful. Incredible. They still have a maniac spirit. They recruit, they build a lot of people. Oh, you know, whatever. They criticize people. Love to criticize people. That’s just so sad to me. I love that couple. And Emma sucked. They’re six generations. So you don’t even make any money from them.

25:16

Make any money from them? Yes, I do. They lock in a fifth, they lock in a fourth. They lock in a third. They lock in a second. They lock in a first. I have what you call security. I’ve had people quit that made $300,000 a year, and I. And I got a pay raise. I don’t want people to quit. I want them to get security. But people get negative. They listen to the wrong people. They get in their own little festivals. Well, you know about this. The company needs to do this. The company needs to do that. Let me tell you what the company needs to do to get you to do what you gotta go do. It’s your company. Company will tell me what to do. Company will tell you what to do.

25:50

But if they did better at this, and you’re right, they probably could do Better at stuff. But you know what else? People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Because I guarantee you, there’s some things I need to do better, and there’s some things that you got to do better. Oh, here goes Meyer again, the company guy. Bullshit. I’m not a company guy. I’m a guy who has an attitude of gratitude. I’m thankful I have not forgotten where I came from. I did live home with my mother and father when I joined this business. My mom and dad did get divorced when I joined this business and they sold their house. I was in this business, and I had to go get an apartment.

26:20

I. I didn’t have enough money to get an apartment, so I moved in with my grandmother in Lodi, New Jersey. Yes. Because I have enough money. Then I got my first apartment in Clifton, New Jersey. I bought my first house in Prospect Border, New Jersey. Then I built my next house in Wayne, New Jersey. And then step after step. The challenge is when you’re taking those steps, making those steps feel like the next one might be off the cliff. And what most people do when they feel like the next one might be off the cliff, they don’t take that next step. I’m here to challenge you. I’m here to encourage you to take that next step. Because there’ll be a landing for you if you stay positive, if you stay thankful.

26:56

Me getting on a frigging airplane today, me and my incredible wife flying back to Jacksonville. We land. I got a couple of people going to meet me because tonight that I wasn’t even buying a new car. I wasn’t even buying. I loved my Range Rover. Loved it. But I’m playing golf. After I was with Keith and Danielle, I felt bad that Sevy Rose didn’t win the trip with us. So I wanted to take him golfing as soon as I landed. Took him to my new club. He goes, coach, I just. At the BMW do. Because we’re doing what Joe, he taught us. Get people to dream, man. They have an X6 competition there. It’s beautiful. I go, tom Busch has an X6 competition. He goes, yeah. I go, wow. What color goes black? Oh, really?

27:35

So sure enough, the next day, I’m visiting my buddy in the hospital. Life short driving there. I was a little depressed. I called my buddy Rob at the BMW. Hey, Rob, you got an X6 competition? He goes, yeah. I go, tell me about it. He goes, oh, your head’s loaded. Have you got any XMs? I got two XM. You got two XMs. On your lot. He goes, yeah. Oh, what color? I go, tim, meet me at The BMW dealership. 770 horsepower. I’m not a gearhead. I’m not a gearhead, but I like power. I do like power. Next thing you know, I buy this thing. Now, tonight, they got me going to a rally. They got. It’s a Pel police helicopter. They’re closing roads. Lamborghinis, Ferraris. And me in my Ex im. I go, baby, this is gonna be great.

28:26

She goes, you are out of your mind. You think I’m gonna get in a car and have people look at us? There’s no way. So I called my boy Jehovich. I go, jovic, Saturday night when we land, you got any time? He goes, to do what? I go get in a rally. He goes, what kind of rally? I don’t know, dude. I don’t know. But we’re gonna drive somewhere and go fast. He said, no rules. I mean, it’s our one time. Then I call Asley Perl. Asley, what are you doing? I’ll be there. I already heard about. Jovis told me. I was hoping you were gonna call me. I don’t know what motivates you. I know what motivates me. Seeing the Otto family on the stage. A plumber who. The leaders gave them a chance, encouraged them, loved them, gave them that opportunity.

29:16

I know this. On Monday, which was November 3rd, I’m at that event every day. There’s a couple things I read, this being one of them, Maxwell’s Daily Reader. And sure enough, Monday, make yourself more valuable. John Gordon. I told him. I go, john, you think it’s a coincidence that this is today? He goes, no way, Jimmy. And he wrote on it, keep growing. See, Scott Fletcher said it so well earlier. We’re not human beings. We’re human becomings. The question is, what do you want to become? I want to become the best version the good Lord allows me to be. I want to thank you for your time today. I challenge you, though. I challenge you between now and the end of the year to look in the mirror and make a decision about how wide do you want to be? Don’t miss this.

30:13

Biggest challenge in Primerica is lack of width. Number one challenge, lack of width. It is a shame how many lunches and dinners I have. And by the way, Chris, when you do coach like, you coach and I used to coach, and I’m trying to do it again, and you ask the real questions. They don’t want to have lunch with you no more. But our team I want you to know I love yous. I want the life you can dream of to have. But I do know this. I’ve been here 41 years. If you’re dealing with clients every day, it’s tough to stay in a positive cocoon. You could blame that on the company. I know the argument is I rather deal with clients I get paid instantly on them than deal with new recruits who quit all the time.

So somebody recently said to me, jim, it just stinks. I work so hard to build a leader and they quit. It’s the worst thing ever. Is it? Is it? I think the worst thing ever might be this working with somebody who never becomes a leader and they stay. That’s why we need to differentiate who. Who’s our contenders and who’s our players. Because I commit to you as your teammate and to the good Lord takes me home, I’m going to work my ass off to remain a contender. God bless you and thanks for having us.
