Video Summary
Hector Lamarque shares his journey from growing up in a 1,000-square-foot home with nine people and no financial examples of success to building generational wealth through Primerica. He emphasizes that success is not about background but about skill development and personal growth.
He credits his transformation to becoming a professional salesperson — mastering the ability to confidently ask for business, recruit, and close. He explains that everything in Primerica is learnable and that confidence comes from building real skills, especially in sales and people relationships.
Hector stresses the importance of asking for help and learning from successful leaders. He removes intimidation around wealth, explaining that successful people are simply individuals who became highly skilled.
Through decades of effort, he created financial independence, funded private education for his children and grandchildren, took extended family on life-changing vacations, supported loved ones financially, and became the “go-to” provider in his family.
He also shares a deeply personal chapter: stepping back from business to care for his wife during her 20-year battle with cancer, made possible because of the financial foundation he built.
His core message: treat Primerica as a serious multi-million-dollar opportunity, work relentlessly on yourself, become a people magnet, and live as the example your family and team can be proud of.

I think one of the most incredible thing about Primerica is if you do the work, your life changes radically. I grew up. I mentioned this earlier, but I grew up in a thousand square foot home with nine people, and we had no money. Nobody went to. You know, my parents didn’t make much money, and I didn’t have any examples of success. You have so many examples of success here, so many people that are. That you can look up to, that you can gather information and knowledge, you know, related to the business and how it can help you. There’s. There’s no shortage of help. You need to make sure you start asking for help. Don’t be shy about asking for help. If you need that, you ask because people are people, especially the people that are the successful people. They want to help you.
They want to share what they’ve done, you know, to become who they are with people that are motivated. So don’t be shy about asking for help. Ask for help. You know, the world is at your disposal here. The other thing is that I think that, you know, if I were you, one of the things I talked about this earlier today, but I’ll say it again, because I think it’s so important. I’m a huge fanatic about becoming a professional salesperson. That’s what I am. That’s the number one reason why I’ve had the success I’ve had in Primerica is I’m a professional salesperson. I know how to get people to say yes to me. And that’s one of the keys if you’re going to get big in Primerica.
You have to develop the ability to get yes out of people like, yes, I want to see your business. Yes, I want to get involved. Yes, I want to, you know, come to your meeting. Yes, yes. Everything about yes, you got to get people saying yes. And so that’s a skill that you can develop even if you’ve never sold anything before. Don’t worry about that. That you. Everything about our business is learnable. You can learn it. There’s no. There’s no thing in our business that you can’t learn, you know, from where we come from. I know for sure. I mean, can you imagine, Jimmy, where you’re at now in your life and the kind of life you live compared to how you grow up and, you know, what you went through, you know, as a kid and.
And then as an adult and then afterwards, before you even started Prime America, you’ve changed your life and you know, and you changed a lot of people’s Lives. And that didn’t just happen. You made that happen. You did the work. You did the work to grow yourself. And you need to say what. Think about where you’re at. What are your skill sets? Like, where do you need work? Where do you need, I mean, do you need help with recruiting people? You need help on setting appointments, you need help on closing transactions. You need to figure out what those things are and then seek it out. There’s all these people that are having tremendous success, that are professionals at the business. Don’t be shy about asking, because if you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. That’s the key.
You’ve got to learn the fact that if you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. So one of the things I did is I asked for help. I always asked for help. And I, and I developed relationships with people that were really good that could share their information with me on how, you know, how they did what they did. The other thing is, you know, I found out the people that you’re intimidated by that you think are so sharp and so special or whatever because they’re wealthy. They’re not, they’re not all that. I, believe me, I have a lot of people that I’ve met over the years. I’m a golfer. And so I’ve had the privilege of playing a lot of golf with very wealthy people. And you know what? Those really wealthy people, they’re not all that.
You should never be intimidated by those people. They’re people, they’re just people. They’re nothing special. They happen to be good at what they do. Possibly. But that doesn’t mean that they’re above you or, you know, you’re inferior to them because you’re not. What you need to do is you need to think about what are the different parts of the business that you need to get good at in order to have success. You got to learn how to sell. You know, you keep hearing me say that, right? Because that’s the number for me. The number one thing is learning how to sell and is what allowed me to. You know, I made over $100 million here. I’ve had an incredible life. I have three incredible homes. I’ve got all the things that people want, travel like crazy and all that thing. But you know what?
I’m not special. You’re not inferior to me. I’m just a guy. I grew up in a, like I said, a thousand square foot home in a. Not a great neighborhood. And I don’t have, I come from A very large Mexican Catholic family. Nobody was successful. And I was able to turn my life around and change it, make it what it’s become, you know, and you all are capable of doing the same thing. But you got to apply yourself. You got to work harder on you than you work on anything else. You got to work hard at growing your skills, growing your knowledge to develop confidence. What you need is confidence. So you grow your skill sets and then your confidence grows and then things start happening, right? You can start recruiting anybody.
One of the things that I think by getting really good at the business and getting great at the sales part, I was never intimidated by anybody. I didn’t go, he has a good job. I can’t talk to him. I can’t get into recruitment. Well, that’s bull. You don’t, that’s not true. You know, everybody is. You can recruit anybody pretty much if you want to. They’re all recruitable if you’re doing a great job. So make sure you just take stock of where you are. What are your sales skills? Like, what are your people skills? You know, the biggest thing I see why most people don’t do as well as they can is their people skills are, they’re not good, they’re inept. And the people skills are everything. You’ve got to get people to like you and trust you to move them.
If you don’t get people to like you and trust you, it’s hard to move them. And so you need to develop that skill. Pay attention to that, you know, about getting really good with your people skills. People skills. I was really fortunate. My, my father had a third grade education, but he was, he’s the, the guy in my life that had the best people skills of anybody I’ve ever met. My dad was unbelievable with people when he, you know, we live in a small town. When he passed away, there was like 500 people at his funeral because of the effect that he had on people. Even though he wasn’t educated, he was just an amazing person. But he had really, he made everybody feel special. If you got around him, he met you, he’d make you feel like a million bucks.
He was amazing at that. So I had a chance to have a, you know, ringside seat to watching him do that. He would have, he used to cut hair in our garage and he was like, he was a part time barber and he’d have 10 or 15 guys there. They’d be drinking beers and talking and having a great time and I’D watch my dad and he just hold court and he just was amazing. And then so all of you have the ability to do that, to become that kind of person where, you know, people are just attracted to you because the personality that you have, the kind of person that you are. My dad, my dad was amazing and he, thank God I became successful before he passed away.
And you know, I was able to do some amazing stuff, take my parents to Europe, traveled all over the place, did a bunch of amazing things. They didn’t have any money and I took care of them. You know, one year my in laws and my parents got married the same month and they were both celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. And this is how awesome Primerica is. I was able to take my entire family, my wife’s family, 40 people to Hawaii. We stayed at the Grand Wailea, which is a pretty damn nice hotel, right? I paid for everything. I paid for the airfare, I gave them spending money. We did all the stuff that you could do there while you’re there, and we had an amazing time.
And I was able to create that situation for my family, for my parents and my in laws and it was life changing. In fact, the next year. Have you ever been to a Club Med vacation? My family didn’t want to. I gave them spending money. They didn’t want to spend the money. They were like trying to see how they go home with money, right. And I said, just enjoy it. Have a good time. So I said, you know, I’m going to take him to, you know, what did I say his name was? Club Med. Club Med, yeah. So I took him to Club Med in the Bahamas or somewhere. And there everything’s inclusive, right? So you don’t, you just go, you pay and I paid for everything. And, and they could eat as much as they want, drink as much as they want.
My family likes to drink, so they could drink as much as they want. And we had the most amazing time. They took advantage of all the different things that you could take advantage of there. And because they felt like it was free, like they didn’t have to spend their own money, right? But you know what it was a bonding experience of spending time with people you love and care about and having a tremendous time. There’s nothing like it. I mean, it’s the most amazing thing ever. And so I was able to do that a few times with my family. And I couldn’t have done that if I wasn’t in prime America. There’s no way I could have ever done that, afforded to do that. And then, you know, my kids, when they started going, I put my kids through private school.
They were in private school all the way to, you know, and then when in college, my son went to UC Santa Barbara, then he went to Wharton Business School, and my daughter went to Stanford. And so they’re both highly educated and it’s not cheap to go to those schools. You know, it costs a pretty penny. But they got to have those kinds of experiences that I wasn’t ever able to have. You know, that was one of the great things about Primerica, that if you have people that you care about, that you love, that you can help them. Because everybody has issues, right, that happen in their lives and sometimes people need help and wouldn’t it be great if you’re the go to guy? I’m the go to guy in my family. I just am.
So people need something that they call Uncle Hector or Hector, you know, my brother, whatever. I take care of, I keep take care of things. And I, and I’ve been able to spend so much time with my kids and my grandkids. I have four grandkids. I got a, my daughter has two kids. A 12. I might have said this already, but a 12 year old and a 17 year old. And my 17 year old, I remember the day she was born. Were, it was raining and were out in the car. My daughter had two births in her house, you know, in the home. One of those home births, right. So she didn’t really want us in the house while she was having a baby, but I remember that like it was yesterday.
And now my baby, you know, her name’s Frankie, is, is getting ready to go to college, you know, and I’m paying for that, all that, and I want to pay for it. I’m excited about being able to do that. I can, I can. They’re going to receive all the money anyway. So I said, why not? I just pay for everything, you know, so they don’t have to worry about educating their kids. Their kids are going to get, you know, they call me Papi, okay? So Papi’s going to take care of it, you know, and so big Papi. Yeah. So I’m able to take care of that for them, right? So they don’t need to worry about that. And I put them all through private school. They’re all in private. All my grandkids are in private school. I take care of all that.
Stuff and I want to do that. I can do that. And I love the fact that I’m able to do that. And same thing. My son Dak, he went to Wharton Business School and he has his own hedge fund now and he’s doing fantastic. And so he’s making me a lot of money, which I’m really excited about. He’s going to get it anyways at some point. It doesn’t really matter. So the better job he does now, the more money he’s going to have in the future, right? So it’s been just, it’s just my life has just been magical. It really has been. That’s the one thing you need to take this and say, this is not just another thing, right? This is a, this is not. To me, this is never a business to make an extra thousand or two thousand dollars.
This is a big time thing. This is a multi, million dollar opportunity. You need to start treating it like that and appreciating how great it is and what it can do for you and your family and your life. It’s just amazing. It is, it’s incredible. I mean, I got to pinch myself and I look back on my life and how it’s transpired over the years and I thank God every day for Primerica, for Art Williams. You know, Art’s not been here for a while, but if Art didn’t do what he did and built this thing, we, you know, a lot of us wouldn’t be here doing this. And it’s been incredible. I mean, I mean, hasn’t it been, Jimmy? I mean, it’s been. We’ve had magical lives. If you think about it, the things that we’re able to do.
I went and played golf with, with you in, in the desert, right, in Scottsdale. And we had a great time. Those, I mean, if I hadn’t met you, I never would have had that great experience with you. And the same thing with, you know, with the Autos, right? I’ve been having, I’ve been having such a great time with them and we’ve enjoyed ourselves tremendous. I have enjoyed myself because they’re tremendous hosts. They’re great people. You’re very fortunate to be in business with the Autos. They’re fantastic people. They’re the kind of people that you want to develop relationships with and learn from and be like, you know, I, I look at him and I’m impressed every time I, I’m around him. And, and you know, Danielle, the way that she Operated tonight. I was going, holy crap, man. She is so good. It’s.
And she didn’t want to. She was, like, shy. I didn’t want to talk. But she’s really good. They’re really good. And it’s exciting to see that. It’s exciting to have, you know, they. They raise the bar. They’re really special. And it’s incredible that we have so many people like that in prime America. That, that and so many great friends that I’ve made over the years that I feel super blessed by that. And you know what? It’s just. This is the beginning, too. I don’t really look at this. I mean, I’ve been at this thing for a long time. This is my 40th year in prime America, by the way. This is my 40th year. I’ve been doing this for 40 years.
And I. I thank God every day for Primerica, for what it’s done for me, what it’s doing for so many of the people that are such good friends of mine. And you need to. You need to really appreciate what you have at your disposal. And every one of you have the same exact opportunity that we have, that those of us who’ve done really well, you have the same one, but you got to take advantage of it, and you got to really work. I think one of the things I see most people don’t realize, you have to work on yourself. You got to really work on yourself. You got to really work on your skill sets, your. Your sales skills, your people skills, your, you know, work on you. You gotta.
You want to become a money magnet, a people magnet, which is a money magnet in prime America. That’s what you want to do, is become that. Become the kind of person that people want to emulate, that people want to follow, that people want to be like. You got to really think about how can you get to be that person that people want to be part of who you are and what you’re developing and what, you know, kind of business you have. That’s. That was always really important to me. The other thing, you know, I’m kind of rambling, but I apologize. My kids, I always, you know, my kids when I started were 4 and 5 years old. Now they’re 46 and 47 years old. Right. And that time went by like that. Right? And.
And one of the most important things in my life to me is I wanted. I wanted my kids to be proud of me, and I wanted my wife to be proud of me, and I wanted to be the person that they’d look up to that. I didn’t want my wife to wake up someday and go, oh, my God, what did I do? How did I get into this thing with this guy? Right? I didn’t want her to do that. I wanted her to look at me and say, thank God that God put me, put Hector in my life. That’s the. I wanted to be that person. And I wanted to be that person for my kids, too. I wanted to be the, you know, the. The most perfect example that I could be for them, right? And that’s the.
Hopefully they would want to be like me in some way and treasure that. So those are things that I did. And you have this vehicle at your disposal right now that you can literally change people’s lives. You can do that. You could be the difference in. And them being something unbelievable or nothing at all. You really have that kind of power. Much more power than you think you have. But your example is everything. You gotta make sure. Are you the perfect example for your children? Are you the perfect example for your teammates? Are you the perfect example? Right? Are you just talking? That’s what I tried to be. I tried to be the perfect example for. For everybody that I cared and loved and wanted to help.
So if you do that, then you will make the biggest difference in people’s lives more than you possibly could imagine. And I’ve had the good fortune to be able to do that. I’ve had an amazing career, and I’m just, you know, I haven’t. I’ve kind of checked out for about 20 years. My wife was dealing with cancer, and I. And I. And I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to. I was already financially dependent and all that, so I didn’t need to just focus on having a business anymore. I could focus on my wife, and I focus on my wife for 20 years. She fought cancer for 20 years. She had three reoccurrences, and finally at the end, it caught up with her. But thank God that I was able to do that.
I don’t have any regrets about, you know, what I did with my life during that period of time. You didn’t see me in Primerica, But I’m ready. I’m ready to go to another level. I’m ready. Why not, right? We have a short time on this. I’m going to go do the things necessary to go to the next level and be the perfect example for my kids, my grandkids, and for all my friends in Primerica. Thank you very much.
